The World Health Organization operating in Kasai has declared that fatal Ebola virus in Democratic Republic of Congo has appeared. 372 cases are expected to die soon and at least 166 people have already died of the virus Until now. The US laboratories in Atlanta and Gabon has declared ebola virus is present in the blood samples. WHO also has said that Shigella dysentry is also seen in the samples.
Ebola shows itself with symptoms of especially unbearable stomach ache and internal bleeding. It is both contagious and has no treatment found yet. Mortality rate determined about ebola is above 90 %.
WHO and Medecins sans Frontieres have sent medical and pharmaceutical supplies to the affected area to help the Congolese. A team of doctors, experts on sanitation and water and the staff to be responsible for transportation are trying to acelerate the preparations to bring clinical care to the area and to organize quarantine service.
WHO, although several villages are under quarantine, declares that the measures taken are enough for now and no other precaution is necessary. The outbreak is considered as the most fatal seen ever. Infected meat is thought to cause the virus to be spread and also blood secretions of ill people can be effective to increase the number of the cases.
In 1995 more than 200 people died of a serious ebola outbreak in Kikwit, very close to the recent outbreak.
Uganda was also affected by a very serious outbreak in 2001, killing more that 200 people. Therefore a red alert has been immediately issued by Uganda. Entebbe international airport has been warned about the passengers who show the symptoms of the virus.
