Antoine Ghanem, Christian deputy
opposed to Syria and killed in Beirut
of the capital of Lebanon, was buried today.
BEIRUT- Leading Lebanese politicians attended
the funeral in Furn El Åžebek region in which generally
Christians live. Coffin of Ghanem was carried to the
church in which the ceremony would be held over the
shoulders of the crowds carrying Lebanon and
Falanjist Party flags.
Due to national mourning, schools are also closed today.
Lebanese government emphasized that they would not
allow the assassination to reach its goal and presidential elections would be held on
time as scheduled before. However it is not likely that the Parliament will be able to
compromise on the president to be elected at the meeting to be held on Tuesday.
Tension between the opposition pioneered by Hizbullah and the ruling party with an
anti-Syria attitude is said to have been triggered by Ghanem's death.
