Russia has announced that it has proved the polar zone, to which many countries- primarily Canada and the US- lay claim, belongs to Russia.
Russian Ministry of Natural Resources, as a result of its research, has alleged they have reached a conclusion that the polar zone, rich in petroleum and natural gas, is an extension of Siberia.
Last August, Russia sent two submarine ships to the zone and hoisted Russian flag onto the bottom of the sea below 4 thousands 200 meters.
The Ministry has completed the pre-examination concerning the proof collected by Russian scientists going to the bottom of the polar zone a short time ago. Experts have concluded that in line with the samples obtained from the bottom of the pole, Lomonosov mountain ranges are the extension of Russian continent.
Russia has always claimed the mountain ranges ongoing along the Northern Ice Sea are the extension of Siberia and accordingly the zone is the Russian territory.
In order for a country to claim right on a territory outside its economic region, that country has to prove that the region is the extension of its own continent.
In addition to Russia, the USA, Canada and Denmark claim right on the Northern Ice Sea which is thought to have ¼ of the world’s energy reserves.
Moscow applied to the UN in 2002 bu its application was rejected due to lack of evidence. It will re-apply in 2009.
