ISTANBUL- On Friday, draft of new Turkish Constitution was reviewed and as a result, Turkish government was criticized severely. The government was blamed by the opposition parties for giving the constitution an Islamic nature. The proposed document did not satisfy Turkish nation.
Scholars preparing the draft gathered with ministers in İstanbul in a hotel and discussed the possible changes.
1982-dated Constitution in effect now was prepared under a military rule and since then it has been criticized as being harsh and it is known that there have been some proposals to ammend it before.
However when AK party (Justice and Development Party) government attempted to form a new constitution, fears have arisen due to the fact that this government has in fact an Islamic nature and will try to make a constitution which includes Islamic elements and to eliminate secularism or change it.
In addition to the reactions coming from the public itself, main opposition party defends that the concept of ‘separation of state and religion’ will be seriously harmed and this constitution will provide a platform which can negatively affect the secular identity of Turkey. Onur Oymen, deputy chairman of Republican People’s Party, says the ruling party tries hard to transform Turkey into a religious state.
While criticisms are coming from every side of the country, the government says the final draft is not ready now but will be online as soon as it takes its final shape. Local media, on the other hand, has already published a copy of the darft. And as seen in this draft, the ban on wearing turban may be allowed in universities.
