
Studies on the new constitution caused Ankara to experience bussy and exciting days. AK Party Central Executive Board will gather today at 14.00 pm. Committee of University Rectors will come together extra ordinarily tomorrow to discuss the draft constitution. The final decision about the ban on turban issue will be made by PM Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
AK Party is searching a formula for turban in universities. Concerns on “Freedom on turban will enable other religious attire to go into universities, too” are tried to be alleviated.
AK Party’s Commission on the new Constitution considers adding the expression ‘Except the attire which is not in compliance with Revolutionary laws’ to the article saying ‘Attire is free in higher education’. Thus, concerns about ‘chador and cloak could enter universities’ are aimed to be softened.
Also, ombudsmanship which is also defined as ‘public auditing’ will be added to the new draft constitution and be made a constitutional institution.
Rectors taking action to discuss the draft
In additon to the voices coming from every side of the public, rectors are also gathering on Wednesday 19 September, holding an extra ordinary meeting. At the meeting, the draft including attire and authorities of Turkish Higher Education Institution (YÖK) will be discussed.
It is forseen by the draft that authorities of YÖK will be limited to coordination and planning and that rectors will be appointed by election to be held in universities without receiving the approval of YÖK and the President.
Chairman of YÖK Teziç will hold a press conference at 12.30 in the afternoon after the meeting and share his opinions with public.
