Committee of Rectors stated that the new constitution should be prepared in agreement with other political parties. According to the Committe, regulating attire with the new constitution is impossible.
ANKARA- Committee of Rectors held a meeting to assess the process of preparing new draft constitution. Making a statement on behalf of the Committe, Chairman of Higher Education Institution ErdoÄŸan Teziç said the ban on turban was a legal ban stemming from decisons made by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and other higher courts and that application in Turkey had been legally found compliant with the European norms and values by the ECHR. Teziç, saying that it was not democratic to prepare the draft only in line with one political party, “If your way is not democratic, concers arise about the content.” said.
Reading the declaration prepared by the Committe, Teziç told that the current Constitution in force had already been modified and now included many amendments. Teziç, “Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) cannot modify the whole Constitution. There are unamendable provisions. TBMM does not have the authority to touch them. It is both a political and legal obligation to take opinions of other political parties while preparing the draft” said.
Claiming the process of preparation of the draft was not democratic, Teziç, “Promises made by AK Party to form the draft in a participatory environment is remote from credibility. Preparation of the draft caused discredit and unrest in society” said and demanded that the process be adjourned until referendum to be held in October 21, 2007.
